The Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March 2006 offers the chance for the people of God to find their way back to the centre of the community and culture.

After successfully equipping the Christian church to reconnect with the local community through outreaches at the Sydney and Athens Games, Fusion and Awakening is now preparing to do this once again for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Last year more than 60 people, from Australia and other countries, both young and old, travelled to Greece to run Awakening festivals at the time of the Olympics. The connections made with local people and the thousands visiting for the Games resulted in a newly emerging work in Greece where the church once again found a place in the community.

The Games in Melbourne is another opportunity in a series of strategic moments.

Plans are already under way for similar outreach in Beijing. Martin Woods, coordinator of the work in Europe and the outreach in Greece, has been invited with others, to visit Beijing in preparation for the China Games. Numbers of Australians of Chinese background have indicated an interest in being on the team – whole churches in some cases.
